I'm rather surprised by this list. My top three, and these are places I've visited and explored personally, are:
1. Vienna: incredible mix of the old and the new, arts and business, green space and new development.
2. Basel & Zurich, Switzerland: again, wonderful preservation of the historic sights while moving fast into the future; excellent public transport and wonderful green spaces; economically solvent.
3. All of Holland: wonderful use of the land for both agriculture and business. Excellent focus on renewable energy both wind and solar; progressive politics to allow for change; excellent mixed use paths for transportation.

Many cities in the US have elements of sustainability but few truly embody all that is possible. Portland, OR comes close in terms of actually having a public transportation system that works, sufficient focus on renewable energy (mostly wind), and the desire to incorporate policies to limit urban sprawl. Still, metro Portland is a vast space that can only be navigated via car and in which the majority of homes are for single families and which were built using very inefficient materials.

[...] Helsinki is just one of the many Scandinavian cities that are holding it down on the sustainability front. Scandinavians have long since been doing their own thing and it always seems to be the right thing, Finns included. Helsinki is a relatively small capital city, population 564,000, but its residents are purported to be some of the best educated in the world. They also have some of the cleanest drinking water reported. Maybe there’s a correlation…? [...]

Team Ethisphere,
We are very happy to see Good data base analysis and projections, Great job done, Congratulations,
Lets make our planet a good place to live in all aspects, lrts preserve the Mother Earth,
John has rightly said - I am so delighted that my home town Hyderabad is among the likes of London and New York. I almost fell off my chair when I saw it on the list! To all those cynical about including an Indian city – just remember WE ARE CHANGING!!

Thanx for this study,
Pritish Kumar (India )

It's a wonderful news to know that Curitiba (Brazil) is on the list. I've been living here sice forever and I have to admit, I haven't seen any city with so many good environmental aspects in the whole Brazil. Besides being a model city, Curitiba also has many things to improve, the most important I suppose is the social equality which has been decreasing since 1990, when the city's population grew drastically.

WTF!?!?
Curitiba one of the best in the world? no way.
With 1 car for every 1.63 person, more than São Paulo with 1 to 1.83 ratio, Crime rising and the only concern of the present mayor is expanding the use of cars I highly doubt that Curitiba will be on this list.
Furthermore, you've probably never used the so great public transportation in Curitiba, because what once was great now is outdated, but all is not lost thanks to visionary urbanisation on the end of the past century, if the public administrators open their eyes to sustainability, then I agree, Curitiba have a really BIG potential to be on the top of green.

Vejam Curitiba - Brasil no Google Earth.

I agree with Aston.. I just relocated to Melbourne from Vancouver. While I love the city it has serious problems with a "car-addicition" and the fact as Aston highlighted that living outside of the city is not only the norm, but encouraged! Talk about crazy traffic congestion, its GHGs emissions are on the same amounts of London which is twice its size!

In some respects Melbourne is doing a great job but so many lost opportunity... lots of broken beer bottles too - they need a cash exchange for bottle recycling for incentives.

I was more than surprised to see Victoria B.C. make your list as it continues to dump its raw sewage in the ocean much to the chagrin of communities across the strait. However, I guess contributing to algea growth does contribute to the greening of the planet. Likewise I am sure debris dumped in the ocean breaks down after only a few decades as opposed to hundreds of years in a landfill. Way to go you clever analysts.

Nice to see Wellington listed here. As a resident, I know that there are indeed some initiatives to make the city more sustainable, e.g. in recycling rubbish. But the City Council is not especially "green" in my opinion - it's still far too keen on building roads in the urban centre, for instance, forgetting that cities are for people, not cars.
