Building a World-Class Ethics and Compliance Program

Building a World-Class Ethics and Compliance Program

“Integrity is something that’s been core to Bristol Myers Squibb for the past century—it was in our first print ad in 1921.” – Adam Dubow, Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer, Bristol Myers Squibb

Bristol Myers Squibb engaged Ethisphere for an independent assessment of their ethics and compliance program. The goal was to benchmark their program against the regulatory requirements and to also benchmark against other global companies, both within, and outside, their industry. They also wanted actionable recommendations on how to continue to build and maintain an ethical culture.

Through the process, Bristol Myers Squibb also earned Compliance Leader Verification, a recognition awarded to companies that have demonstrated a commitment to, and investment in, a leading ethics and compliance program.

Benchmarking an Ethics & Compliance Program against Best Practices

“We want to be proactive. The decision to pursue the assessment was driven by a combination of best practice in the industry, and the need to make sure we’re on the right path and focusing on the right areas.” – Hope Scott, Vice President, Chief Risk & Compliance Officer, Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield of California, a health insurance giant serving over four million members and employing 6,800 people, has a simple mission: to ensure all Californians have access to high-quality healthcare at an affordable price. “Everyone needs access to healthcare from the moment of birth, but the system by which we give it to people is very fragmented,” explains Hope Scott, the organization’s VP, Chief Risk and Compliance Officer. “There are many people trying to make it better.”

Those people include federal and state regulators, as well as legislators. “It’s a very complex regulatory environment to be providing such fundamental services to people,” she says. That environment makes it all the more important that Blue Shield of California has strong policies, institutions, and an overall culture oriented toward ethical business practices. To help support her work, Scott engaged Ethisphere to perform a Program Assessment and get a qualified outside perspective on the strengths of the organization’s current ethics and compliance program and understand areas for improvement.

Benchmarking an Ethics & Compliance Program: How to Turn Insights into Actions

“What we wanted in the Compliance Leader Verification process was to measure ourselves against what we considered to be the most respected peer group in the field, the World’s Most Ethical Companies®.” – Alistair Y. Raymond, Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer, Avangrid

Avangrid operates in a complex, highly regulated environment—energy and utilities. A strong ethics and compliance program is critical to maintaining the trust of stakeholders, from customers to state and federal regulators.

To ensure that their ethics and compliance program addressed the expectations of both their regulators and their customers, for the past six years Avangrid has actively engaged in external program assessments with advisors, including industry consultants and law firms. In 2018, Avangrid’s primary shareholder, Iberdrola, S.A., engaged Ethisphere for a compliance program assessment and earned the Compliance Leader Verification. Following Iberdrola’s positive experience, Avangrid enlisted Ethisphere to complete a review of their program with the same goal of achieving Compliance Leader Verification.
